Presented at Stockholm Furniture Fair, the Ishinomaki Laboratory pavilion showcases the results of a three-day workshop where seven designers explore DIY as both method and mindset. The project culminates in a collective installation that reflects hands-on experimentation and embraces the spontaneity of self-built design.

The temporary structure, constructed from Lunawood Thermowood and raw MDF, is assembled in the simplest way possible. Referencing traditional house carpentry while remaining purposefully unpolished, the pavilion serves as an exhibition space for the designers’ pieces. Its pared-back expression emphasizes accessibility, material honesty, and the core principle of doing more with less.

Founded in the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, Ishinomaki Laboratory began as a community-driven initiative to rebuild using limited tools and materials. Over time, it evolved into a globally recognized furniture brand rooted in open-source design, local production, and social engagement. The Stockholm installation carried this spirit forward — bringing people together through craft, simplicity, and collaboration.
